Myopia treatment usually brings glasses and contact lenses to mind, but your everyday lifestyle plays a bigger role in managing short-sightedness than most people realise. From how much time your child spends outside to screen habits and lighting, small daily changes can meaningfully support clinical myopia treatment and help slow progression over time.
Booking an eye test is one of the simplest ways to look after your sight, yet many people put it off because they are unsure what happens or how much it will cost. As a family-run opticians that has cared for eyes across Birmingham for over 40 years, we hear these questions every day. In this guide, we explain what to expect from an eye test in Birmingham, how long it takes and how eye test costs work at our Moseley practice.
An eye test is about much more than updating your glasses prescription. Our optometrists check how clearly you see and take a close look at the health of your eyes. It is a calm, comfortable process, and we explain everything as we go.
Your appointment begins with a relaxed chat about your general health, your lifestyle and any changes you have noticed in your vision. We then check how clearly you can see and how well your eye muscles are working. This helps us decide if you need glasses or contact lenses and which prescription will suit you best.
Next, we examine the inside of your eyes, including the retina. This part of your eye test can pick up early signs of common eye conditions such as:
Many of these conditions develop gradually and without pain, which is why regular eye tests matter even when your vision feels fine. Your eyes can also reveal signs of wider health problems, including high blood pressure and diabetes.
An eye test usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes, covering both your vision check and your eye health assessment. It may take a little longer if additional tests are needed or if you have specific concerns you would like to talk through with us.
The cost of an eye test depends on the type of examination and any additional services you need. Every patient is different, so the best way to get an accurate eye test price is to speak with our friendly team, who will happily talk you through your options.
As an NHS patient, you can book an NHS eye test with us. Your NHS eye exam checks your sight and the health of your eyes, helping us find problems before they become more serious and look for signs of other health issues.
All children under 16, and those aged 16 to 18 in full-time education, are entitled to a free eye test in Birmingham through the NHS. If your child needs glasses, they may also qualify for an NHS eye test voucher to help with the cost of lenses and frames. Learn more about our children’s eye examinations.
If you are not entitled to an NHS eye examination, you can choose a private eye examination. We offer three tiers:
Alongside our eye tests, we offer advanced scans for a more detailed view of your eye health. OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) takes a 3D image of the back of your eye and can help spot conditions such as glaucoma up to four years earlier than traditional methods. Optomap imaging captures a wide-angle view of your retina without the need for dilation. Both scans are quick and non-invasive.
Looking after your eyes should feel straightforward and reassuring. At Pabari Opticians, we take the time to get to know you, understand your needs and give honest advice in a warm, welcoming setting. After your eye test, we can also help you choose the right glasses or contact lenses from our range of designer eyewear.

A standard eye test assesses your vision and eye health, while an OCT scan goes deeper with detailed images of your retina’s layers. It is worth considering if you are over 40, have a family history of eye disease or have noticed changes in your vision.
Bring your current glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, along with a list of any medication you take.
